In 2023, Reuben College was awarded a $250,000 grant from the Templeton World Charity Foundation, Inc. to pilot a new programme designed to address some of the most pressing global challenges of our day. The Global Challenges Programme combines the highest level of intellectual rigour with an impact-first approach to addressing the most pressing global challenges of our day. With the support of the College, the programme integrates departments and disciplines from across the University.
Generation AI Initiative
In its pilot phase (2024-2026), the Global Challenges Programme is focused on exploring the impact of advanced AI systems on human development. The Generation AI initiative was launched in March 2024 and since then has conducted an extensive range of work. This includes identifying core challenges in this area, convening the community through a series of events, supporting the establishment of 5Rights’ Code of Conduct on Children and AI, and establishing a template for ethical design masterclasses.
“Young people will be creators and consumers of AI in the very near future. It is critical we design systems to support their growth, development, and safety as features of the AI instead of afterthoughts.”
